Imphal, March 13:
Shija Eye Care Foundation and Shija Hospital and Research Institute Pvt. Ltd. organized a mass rally today to mark “World Glaucoma Week 2025” and raise awareness about glaucoma. The rally commenced from the western gate of Kangla at around 7:30 AM and concluded at Shija Hospital and Research Centre, Langol, in Imphal West district.
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, potentially leading to vision loss and blindness, often due to increased pressure inside the eye. Speaking at the event, Dr. Kh. Palin, Managing Director of Shija Hospital and Research Institute Pvt. Ltd., highlighted that many people remain unaware of glaucoma, which, if left untreated, can cause irreversible blindness. While conditions such as cataracts can be treated surgically, there is no cure for glaucoma. However, timely detection can help control the disease and prevent further damage. As part of the global awareness initiative, Shija Hospital is offering free glaucoma detection services at its OPD, he added.
Dr. Dinakumar of Shija Eye Care Foundation stated that Glaucoma Awareness Week, observed from March 9 to March 16, aims to educate the public about the risks of glaucoma. He noted that nearly 80% of people are unaware of the disease, which can lead to permanent blindness. He urged people to be vigilant about eye health and emphasized the importance of early detection in preventing vision loss.
