The Department of Plastic Surgery, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, today organised the East Zone Burn CME 2026, bringing together leading burn care specialists, healthcare professionals, nursing personnel and students to discuss recent advances in burn management and treatment.
The inaugural session was attended by Prof. Sameek Bhattacharya, President of the National Academy of Burns, India, as Chief Guest. Prof. N. Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent of RIMS Hospital, presided over the function, while Prof. L. Rajesh Singh, Dean (Academics), RIMS, attended as Guest of Honour. Prof. Akoijam Ibohal Singh, Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery, was also present.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Sameek Bhattacharya commended RIMS for its commitment to quality healthcare and efforts towards NABH accreditation. He observed that kerosene-related burn injuries have declined due to improved socio-economic conditions and government initiatives, but noted a rise in scald burns among children.
Describing burns as a significant public health concern, he stressed the need for safer home environments, a multi-sectoral approach to prevention, and comprehensive rehabilitation for burn survivors.
Prof. N. Sanjib Singh highlighted the importance of continuous medical education, interdisciplinary collaboration and evidence-based practices in strengthening burn care services and improving patient outcomes.
The CME featured scientific sessions on burn care, reconstructive surgery, critical care, wound management and rehabilitation, with experts from within and outside the state sharing their knowledge and experiences. The programme witnessed active participation from department heads, faculty members, medical officers, nursing staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students, providing a valuable platform for academic exchange and professional development.
