RIMS marks World Rare Disease Day 2026

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, observed World Rare Disease Day 2026 today at the OPD Complex of RIMS Hospital, Imphal. The programme was organized to raise awareness about rare diseases, promote early diagnosis, and strengthen support systems for patients and their families.
Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, RIMS Imphal, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Prof. S. Subhaschandra Singh, Head of the Department of Radiodiagnosis and Medical Superintendent (i/c), RIMS Hospital, presided over the function. Dr. N. Shugeta Devi, Nodal Officer for Rare Diseases, State Health Service, Government of Manipur and Prof. Ch. Shyamsunder, Head, department of Pediatrics & Nodal Officer, Rare Diseases Committee, RIMS, Imphal attended as Guest of Honour.
In his address, the Director stated that this marks the institute’s first observance of World Rare Disease Day since its designation as the 13th Centre of Excellence in January last year. He emphasized that rare diseases affect over 300 million people worldwide and are often chronic, genetic, progressive, and life-threatening in nature, with challenges in diagnosis and limited treatment options. He highlighted that under the National Policy for Rare Diseases, 2021, RIMS provides advanced diagnostic services, multidisciplinary clinical care, genetic counselling, research and training initiatives, and financial assistance of up to Rs. 50 lakhs per eligible patient. He further noted that the institute collaborates with other Centres of Excellence across the country to strengthen coordinated care and service delivery.
The programme was attended by the Deputy Director (Admn), Dean (Academic), Principals of the College of Nursing and Dental College, Heads of Departments, the Chief Accounts Officer-cum-Financial Advisor, faculty members, nursing officials, staff, and students of RIMS, Imphal.
Meanwhile, Dental College, RIMS, Imphal successfully conducted an Anti-Ragging Workshop for 1st Year and 2nd Year BDS students today at the Examination Hall of the Dental College. The programme was organized by the Dental College, RIMS Imphal.
