The School of Agricultural Science, Manipur University organised “A one day National Training on Indian Knowledge System: Integrating the Methods and skills of Traditional Systems of Agricultural practices in North East India”.
The inaugural session was attended by Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Vice Chancellor, Manipur University as the Chief Guest, Prof. Gopal K.N. Chhetry, Dean, School of Agricultural Science, Manipur University as the President, Dr. Lokho Puni, Retd. IFS & Member, MPSC and Prof. Kh. Ibohal Singh HOD, Department of Entomology, CAU, Imphal as Guests of Honour and Resource Person.
Dr. Lokho Puni, (Retd. IFS) Member of Manipur PSC, provided an in-depth knowledge on traditional agricultural practices. He emphasized traditional soil solarization techniques, the revival of indigenous knowledge involving specific tree species to enhance soil fertility, and the importance of offering incentives to traditional farmers as a means of encouragement. The chief guest of the program, Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, the Vice Chancellor of Manipur University, emphasized the pressing need for research to address the loss of agricultural wealth, conservation of rice genetic pool and GI tagging of native species and to preserve the traditional knowledge intertwined with the indigenous communities, particularly in Manipur. Prof. Kh. Ibohal Singh, Head of the Department of Entomology at CAU, Imphal, highlighted the urgent need to integrate the Indian Knowledge System to address the escalating use of agrochemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides and also highlighted the integration of several Indian Traditional Knowledge system with modern agriculture. Prof. G. K. N. Chhetry, Dean of the School of Agricultural Science and President of the program, discussed the adoption and preservation of IKS and the significance and necessity of developing methods and skills rooted in the Indian Knowledge System.
