Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) today conducted the swearing-in ceremony of its newly elected office bearers for the term 2025 to 2028 at the Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board complex.
The oath-taking ceremony was held at the temple premises, during which Waikhom Gojen Meetei was sworn in as President, Langoljam Nongmailembi as Vice President, Oinam Keinahanbi as Vice President, Paonam Thakaba Meetei as Secretary General, Kh. Chandrakanta as Joint Secretary General, Gaising Panmei as Secretary Hill Affairs, Ch. Rahaman as Secretary Minority, and Md. Islaudin as Joint Secretary Minority, along with other office bearers.
Addressing the gathering, MEELAL President Waikhom Gojen Meetei said the organisation will work towards setting up dedicated institutions in Manipur for systematic teaching, research, and promotion of Meetei Mayek and Meetei literature, which he said have been preserved through generations. He stated that MEELAL aims to take Meetei script and literature beyond the state and introduce them at national and international levels.
He further stated that Meetei Mayek has already been adopted in Manipur through government notification for use in vehicle registration numbers and academic curricula up to postgraduate and PhD levels. He asserted that from January 2026, Meetei Mayek should be mandatorily used across the state in both public and private spaces, from official signboards to other written displays.
MEELAL also appealed to scholars, writers, and traditional custodians associated with Ayiba and Ayibising traditions, Wareng, Seireng, Esei Mayek, Sumang Khumei, Phampak Khumei, Mami Khumei, and other forms of Meetei literature to actively support efforts to expand the use of Meetei Mayek. The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the linguistic and cultural foundation of Manipur through wider adoption of the indigenous script.
