Manipur University team visits Sorshia Christian College, Mapao Zingtun’s emerging ‘Peace Campus’

An inspection team from Manipur University visited Sorshia Christian College, Mapao Zingtun (Khullen), Kangpokpi District, to assess the young institution for up-gradation from 1st year to 2nd year B.A. and renewal of temporary affiliation for the academic session 2025–26. For the students and villagers gathered on the hillside campus, the visit felt less like a routine inspection and more like a recognition that their quiet experiment in education and peace is being taken seriously. Sorshia Christian College, established in 2024 and affiliated to Manipur University, offers B.A. courses in English, Sociology, Political Science, History and Education. For many first-generation learners, it is the first time a full degree feels within reach without having to leave home or brave long, uncertain journeys to distant towns.
The Manipur University team was led by Prof. H. Sukhdev Sharma, Director of the College Development Council, accompanied by senior faculty members Prof. Laishram Rajen from the Department of Political Science, Prof. Irom Gambhir from the Department of English and Dr. Jacob Luiram, Associate Professor in the Department of History, along with CDC officials Chaoba Takenchangbam, Lamabam Jayananta Khuman and P. Bandhan. Welcomed by the college community, the team first attended a multimedia presentation that traced the journey of Sorshia Christian College from a simple idea to a functioning campus, outlining its vision, student profile, classroom and library facilities, and plans for academic growth.
The delegation then moved through the college corridors, visiting classrooms, the library and office spaces, examining facilities and discussing with teachers how classes are conducted. What gives this visit a deeper meaning is the larger story of MapaoZingtun. Side by side with the college stands Needy Home Academy, the residential school that has already drawn national attention for remaining calm and united even at the height of Manipur’s recent violence. The school was profiled in the national press as being “untouched by Manipur’s tumult” and as a place where Kuki and Meitei children live, study and play together when many other areas were divided. Sorshia Christian College is the natural next chapter in that story: it takes the same spirit of trust, discipline and shared learning and extends it into the college years, turning this quiet village into a small but powerful “peace campus”.
Speaking on behalf of the management, Dr. Atom Sunil Singh, Director, Sorshia Christian College, expressed deep gratitude to Manipur University and the College Development Council for taking the time to come to Mapao Zingtun. The college community now looks forward to a positive outcome from the inspection.
