The Department of Anthropology at Manipur University observed the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2024. The programme was graced by Professor W. Nabakumar Singh, Former Dean of the School of Human and Environmental Science, as an invited speaker. He delivered a lecture on “Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact.”
Professor W. Nabakumar expressed the emergence of the concept of the term “Indigenous” and the transformation of Homo sapiens into Homo hierarchicus due to colonial and imperialist. He further explained that the indigenous people are conceptualized in three levels, chronological, relational, and normative perspective. He emphasized that indigenous communities often suffer due to voluntary isolation and initial contact, facing challenges such as political colonialism, bio-colonialism, gene piracy, and becoming environmental and conservation refugees in their own lands.
The program concluded with remarks by Professor S. Jibonkumar Singh, Dean of the School of Human and Environmental Science.
The program was attended by Professor W. Nabakumar, Professor S. Jibonkumar, and Professor Mc. Arun, Head of the Department of Anthropology Manipur University. Faculty members, students, and researchers from the Anthropology Department of Manipur University were also present.
