The 18th Mami Numit, commemorating the birth of Manipuri cinema, will be observed on April 9, 2025, alongside the 4th Foundation Day of the SN Chand Cine Archive & Museum (SNCCAM). The observance is being jointly organised by the Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) and Film Forum Manipur, in keeping with annual tradition.
The day’s programme will begin with a floral tribute at the Memorial Stone of Manipuri Cinema, paying respect to the deceased film pioneers and practitioners, followed by a formal function at the Palace Auditorium of MSFDS. The event will be graced by Special Commissioner, Art & Culture as Chief Guest, with the Director, Art & Culture serving as Guest of Honour. The Chairman of Film Forum Manipur will preside over the ceremony.
A major highlight of the function will be the presentation of the significance of Mami Numit and the Progress Report of SNCCAM by the Secretary of MSFDS, followed by a talk on “Cinema as Cultural Heritage” by noted film conservationist Dr. Rajkumar Johnson. The event will conclude with a musical performance at the MSFDS courtyard till 8:30 pm.
In a significant addition to the day’s proceedings, the winners of the 16th Manipur State Film Awards (MSFA) 2025, including the Lifetime Achievement Award carrying a cash prize of ¹ 1,00,000, will be officially declared at 2:30 PM at the MSFDS Preview Theatre.
The observance of Mami Numit marks a landmark moment in the history of Manipuri cinema—the release of ‘Matamgi Manipur’, the first-ever Manipuri feature film, on April 9, 1972. The occasion continues to serve as a moment of reflection and celebration for the state’s rich cinematic journey.
