Imphal, Dec 26:
The Lamshang Municipal Council office has been closed indefinitely following unbearable monetary demands made by armed groups. The closure was confirmed by Council Chairperson Aribam Thaja, who stated that the council had no choice but to suspend operations due to the inability to meet the extortionate demands and the associated risks to its members.
Chairperson Thaja disclosed that this development comes after months of escalating threats. Since May 3, 2023, there have been continuous attempts by the council to function despite these challenges. However, the situation has now deteriorated to the point where ensuring the safety of council members and staff has become impossible.
The council office, which is located in Lamshang, had been serving the public amidst a growing climate of fear and uncertainty. The Chairperson highlighted that the office is situated in a Red Zone, a region known for its volatility, further compounding the difficulties of providing uninterrupted services to residents.
Expressing concern over the situation, the council has appealed for immediate attention and support from authorities to address the issue of extortion by armed groups. It emphasized the importance of restoring safety and ensuring that public services can resume without fear or disruption.
