Imphal, Jan 3:
The Apunba Nupi Khunai Lup of Lamsang Bazar organized a sit-in protest at the heart of Lamsang Bazar, condemning a police shooting incident in Thoubal District. The protest was held to demand justice for the victims and accountability from the authorities.
The incident in question occurred on December 14 at Salungfam School area in Thoubal District, where a police commando allegedly opened fire, leaving one person injured and six others critically wounded. Eyewitnesses reported that the shooting caused panic among residents, with many questioning the use of force by the police in a civilian area.
The protesting women, including Meira Paibis (torchbearer women activists), carried placards and banners calling for an impartial investigation into the incident. They expressed outrage over the escalating violence and demanded that the authorities take strict action against those responsible.
Leaders of the Apunba Nupi Khunai Lup stated that incidents like these erode public trust in law enforcement and create an atmosphere of fear and insecurity. They emphasized that police personnel must act responsibly and ensure the safety of the people instead of resorting to unnecessary violence.
The sit-in protest attracted significant attention, with local residents and civil society organizations extending their solidarity. Protesters urged the government to ensure justice for the victims and prevent such incidents in the future.
The Thoubal District Police have yet to release an official statement on the matter, and demands for a thorough investigation continue to grow.
