The Institute of Liver and Digestive Sciences (ILDS) Hospital, Kwakeithel, observed World Hepatitis Day 2026 with a week-long awareness campaign under the global theme, “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down,” to promote awareness, early detection and prevention of viral hepatitis.
The hospital stated that Hepatitis B and C are the leading causes of chronic liver disease, liver cirrhosis and liver cancer, together claiming around 1.34 million lives annually worldwide. It noted that Hepatitis C is now curable, while Hepatitis B can be effectively managed with medication. Vaccines are available for Hepatitis A, B and E, and diagnosis and treatment for chronic Hepatitis B and C are provided free of cost at designated government centres under the National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme (NVHCP).
As part of the observance, ILDS organised free screening for Hepatitis B and C, free FibroScan examinations for liver fibrosis and fatty liver assessment, free Hepatitis B vaccination for eligible individuals, a reel competition, a phone-in programme with ISTV Network, and offered a 50 per cent discount on laboratory investigations and ultrasonography.
A Hepatitis Awareness Rally from Kangla Western Gate to the ILDS Hospital campus saw participation from doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, Meira Paibis, local clubs and media personnel.
The inaugural function was attended by Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh as chief guest. ILDS Managing Director Dr. Nongthombam Suraj Kumar, Consultant Nephrologist Dr. Naorem Sarat Kumar Singh and AHRI Managing Director Aribam Kinghem Sharma also attended.
