Thoubal, Feb 8:
A cleanliness drive was conducted at the Khongjom War Memorial Complex as part of a Mega Social Service Camp initiated by the MPDF, Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) and local clubs of Thoubal District. The campaign, which began on December 15, saw participation from local clubs and residents who joined hands to restore the sanctity of the historic site.
Speaking on the occasion, FOCS President Th. Manihar stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness at the war memorial. He urged visitors to ensure that the site remains litter-free and well-maintained to preserve its historical and cultural significance. He also pointed out that the negligence of some visitors has led to an untidy state of the complex, necessitating the social service initiative.
Manihar further called on the Manipur State Government to allocate a special budget for the upkeep of the complex in the upcoming Assembly Session. He emphasized that sustained maintenance efforts are needed to protect the historical site and allow future generations to appreciate its significance.
The FOCS President highlighted that the Khongjom War Memorial Complex is a sacred place where warriors fought bravely for the land. He urged concerned authorities and the general public to work together to preserve the site and called on the Manipur Tourism Department to develop it further as a key historical and tourist attraction.
He also pointed out that while Khongjom Day is observed annually at the complex, maintenance should not be limited to this occasion alone. He suggested that a special financial package be allocated in the State Assembly to ensure year-round preservation and enhancement of the site.
The Khongjom War Memorial Complex holds immense historical significance, not just for Manipur but for the entire country. The committee responsible for its management should coordinate with the government and local communities to implement long-term preservation measures, he added.
