The Economic and Resource Development Organization (ERDO) has alleged that the budget presented in Parliament looks down on Manipur. Shanta Nahakpam, General Secretary of ERDO, expressed disappointment over the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, stating that it overlooks the economic issues facing Manipur.
Speaking to the media, he pointed out the absence of specific provisions for Manipur in the budget. “There is no mention of Manipur. There is no concern shown for the economic status, market demand, or production of Manipur. Despite the budget receiving praise, it does not address Manipur’s concerns.”
He highlighted the importance of grant-in-aid, central government projects, and the state’s income as the three pillars of Manipur’s economy. “We lack purchasing power. The budget does not address the economic impact suffered due to violence,” he added.
Shanta Nahakpam also highlighted the loss of NREGs and other significant funds due to the state’s failure to submit necessary reports and documents. “The budget looks down on Manipur, even though some may praise it. Our people should take a stand on the economy. The government’s financial books and accounts are not in good shape. Our state is struggling.”
He further elaborated on the state’s economic challenges, noting, “Half of the GST revenue is lost. The floods, which occurred twice, have severely affected agriculture, causing 900 crore damage in the market. Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are suffering due to violence, but the budget does not aim to improve the social and economic status of Manipur.”
