ZUF condoles loss of lives, criticizes NSCN-IM’s actions

IT News
Imphal, May 5:
The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of Zeliangrong individuals who lost their lives during an encounter with Indian security forces on April 29, 2025, at Dihamlai, located between Kubing and Herakilo villages in NC Hills, Assam. The group stated that the sacrifices of these individuals for the cause of the Naga people would always be remembered and honoured in the annals of the nation’s history. Expressing solidarity with the bereaved families, the ZUF prayed for the departed souls to rest in eternal peace.
In the same statement, the ZUF expressed strong criticism and concern over the alleged misuse of Zeliangrong youths by the NSCN-IM leadership. According to the ZUF, NSCN-IM had been disrupting peace in Zeliangrong-inhabited areas to serve their own self-interests. The organization alleged that the indiscriminate collection of taxes from poor villagers and local officials, as well as heavy monetary demands from businesses operating in Zeliangrong areas, had turned developmental efforts into daily exploitation.
The ZUF accused NSCN-IM leaders of amassing personal wealth and indulging in lavish lifestyles while ordinary people suffered. It condemned the practice of sending young Zeliangrong men to fight against their own communities, asserting that these actions served only the ambitions of a few NSCN top leaders.
Issuing a stern warning, the ZUF urged the NSCN-IM leadership to stop what it described as the exploitation of Zeliangrong youths. It called on all youths currently affiliated with such groups to return and participate in a unified struggle for the Zeliangrong Homeland—a vision they said had been cherished and sacrificed for by their forefathers. The group further appealed to former defectors to rejoin the mainstream and contribute towards achieving the community’s aspirations.
In addition, the ZUF expressed sorrow over a recent violent land dispute between Irianglong and Dailong villages, which reportedly led to multiple injuries. Describing the two villages as historical pillars of peace and unity in the region, the organization stated that the unfortunate incident had cast a dark shadow over their shared legacy.
The ZUF concluded its statement with a call for both villages to renounce violence and embrace dialogue and reconciliation, reiterating that peace and unity are foundational to the Zeliangrong identity and strength.
The press release was jointly issued by Psalm Gonmei, RTO of Makhuillongdi Region, and Meidinlung Kamei, RTO of Asalu Region.
