Noney, Dec 1:
The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has issued a statement clarifying the recent disturbances that took place in Sangji Village, Noney District, Manipur. According to Louis Gangmei, Secretary of Information & Publicity for the ZUF, the situation began when elements of the NSCN-IM intruded into the village and surrounding areas, causing significant unrest.
The statement explained that while the Zeliangrong Tiger Force (ZTF), the armed wing of ZUF, was conducting routine patrols in the region, NSCN-IM members deliberately created threats by firing gunshots in public spaces. This was seen as an attempt to provoke and challenge the ZTF. The situation escalated beyond the point of tolerance, leading to a counter-confrontation that resulted in widespread insecurity and fear among the local population.
The ZUF expressed deep concern over the emotional distress faced by the public, acknowledging the hardships endured by the people of Sangji Village and its surrounding areas. The displacement of residents and the establishment of relief camps in nearby villages were described as an unfortunate but inevitable consequence of the situation.
The statement also warned that further escalation could occur if the public in the affected areas continues to misidentify the ZUF as the aggressors without understanding the underlying causes of the conflict. The ZUF clarified that NSCN-IM had come from far beyond their designated camps into areas under ZUF’s protection, provoking tensions. The Front made it clear that they would intensify their defensive measures until NSCN-IM’s provocative actions ceased.
The ZUF cautioned that there were local individuals working as agents for the adversary. If this trend continued, the ZUF stated that it would not hesitate to take further action, with any consequences borne by the individuals involved.
