Imphal, April 1:
The Zomi Council has strongly criticized the Manipur government’s apparent bias in addressing cases of missing persons, highlighting what it calls a troubling pattern of favoritism. While swift action and a substantial cash reward were offered in the case of Luwangthem Mukesh’s disappearance, the council pointed out that similar disappearances involving the Zomi community have been met with indifference. One such case is the abduction of Muangpu Langel from Vengnuam, Jiribam, by Arambai Tenggol on June 6, 2024, which remains unresolved despite repeated appeals.
The council emphasized that over 11 marginalized individuals, including members of the Zomi community, have gone missing without any significant measures taken by the authorities, leaving their cases largely ignored. Recently, the government announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for information leading to the recovery of a missing person in the Imphal valley. However, the Zomi Council argues that similar rewards and actions should be extended to all missing persons cases, ensuring justice is equally applied to the Zomi and other tribal communities.
In its statement, the Zomi Council condemned the systemic disparity in the government’s response and called for immediate corrective action. It made clear that complacency would no longer be tolerated, and should justice remain unattained, the council would pursue every democratic recourse to ensure the fundamental right to equality and equal protection under the law for all citizens.
