Imphal, July 28:

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) marked World Hepatitis Day 2024 with a significant event organized by the Department of Medicine. This year’s theme, “It’s Time for Action,” underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and action against hepatitis.
The observance was graced by distinguished guests: Prof. Ch. Dhanaraj, Head of the Department of Medicine; Prof. Kh. Ranjana Devi, Head of the Department of Microbiology; Prof. Brojen Akoijam, Dean of Academics at RIMS; Prof. N. Sanjib, Medical Superintendent of RIMS; and Prof. G. Sunilkumar Sharma, Director of RIMS.
Director Prof. G. Sunilkumar Sharma emphasized the critical importance of World Hepatitis Day, noting that a large segment of the public remains largely uninformed about hepatitis, with up to 90 percent lacking detailed knowledge. He highlighted that Hepatitis B and C pose significant health risks, potentially leading to severe conditions such as liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. However, he reassured that these conditions can be effectively managed and cured with appropriate medical intervention and increased public awareness.
In alignment with the day’s theme, the event featured a free screening and consultation camp for Hepatitis B and C. Approximately 104 individuals participated in the screening, and 4 cases of Hepatitis C were identified. This initiative highlights the importance of early detection and treatment in managing and preventing the spread of hepatitis.
The event aimed to enhance public understanding, promote early detection, and encourage proactive measures to address hepatitis, supporting the global movement towards improved prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of this serious health issue.
Meanwhile, the World Hepatitis Day observance has been held today at Hotel Yaiphaba, Thangal Bazar. The program has been organized by the Manipur Network of Positive People (MNP+) and PATH under the theme “It’s time for action.”
From the side of the organizers, Deepak of MNP+ and Rk Nalinikanta of CONE attended the program. Several guests attended the event, including Dr. RK Rosie, State Nodal Officer of NVHCP, NHM; Dr. Kh. Lokeshwar, MS of JNIMS; Dr. Kh. Sasheekumar Mangang, Ombudsman of MACS; Hijam Dinesh of Kripa Society; Y. Shashikumar of SASO; Mr. Th. Jotin of Care Foundation; and Mr. N. Roshan, VP of IDUF.
