World Environment Health Day was observed today at Chamdil Khullen in Chandel district, alongside the nationwide cleanliness campaign “Ek Din Ek Ghanta Ek Saath” and the ongoing “Sewa Parv” activities.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. N. Munal Meitei, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Chandel, said that the day is observed worldwide to remind people of the strong connection between a healthy environment and human well-being. He stressed that living in a clean environment ensures better health, and urged people to take collective responsibility in protecting nature.
Highlighting local issues, Dr. Munal described Chandel as one of the most beautiful regions of Manipur but expressed concern over deforestation and forest destruction caused by human activities. He pointed out that large-scale poppy cultivation has been a major factor in forest degradation across the state, warning that such practices are harmful in the long run. He called upon communities to work together to conserve forests, particularly in the face of climate change.
The DFO further announced that the 71st Wildlife Week, beginning on October 2, will be observed nationwide. He appealed to the people of Chandel to actively participate in forest conservation efforts during the week and make the campaign a success.
As part of today’s observance, the “Ek Din Ek Ghanta Ek Saath” programme was carried out at Chamdil Khullen with enthusiastic participation from villagers. The cleanliness drive, held under the SEWA PARV campaign launched on September 17 as part of the “Nation First @ 75 Campaign”, witnessed active involvement of 180 households in the village.
Officials, villagers, and local leaders jointly took part in the activities, reinforcing the message of environmental protection and community responsibility.
