A large number of women staged a roadblock on National Highway 37 at Langjing Achouba early this morning, bringing traffic to a standstill in protest against the authorities’ failure to repair the deteriorating highway stretch.
The protest, led by the Langjing Achouba Meira Paibi, was sparked by long-standing grievances over the deplorable road conditions, which have caused immense hardship to local residents. Secretary of the group, Nandeibam Ongbi Memcha Devi, stated that their repeated appeals for blacktopping the road have been ignored, forcing them to take drastic action. She pointed out that dust pollution from the damaged road has led to health issues, while frequent accidents have put lives at risk.
This is the fifth time the group has blocked the highway to demand urgent repairs. Previous temporary measures, such as sprinkling water to control dust, have only worsened the situation by creating muddy, slippery conditions. Frustrated by the lack of government response, protesters placed iron pipes across the road to halt vehicular movement, declaring that the blockade would continue until authorities take concrete steps to repair the road.
The protest caused severe traffic disruptions, affecting commuters and transporters using the vital highway. Authorities have yet to issue an official response, and tensions remain high as the agitation continues. Residents insist that without immediate action, they will intensify their protests in the coming days.
