Imphal, Sept 6:
The Ghari Women Development Centre has called for stringent legal action against Waikhom Sikandar for allegedly firing a gun and creating terror in the Langjing Achouba Makha Leikai area of Imphal West.
Speaking at the Manipur Press Club, Ngariyanbam Dasumati Devi, Secretary of the Centre, detailed the incident, which occurred on September 1. Sikandar reportedly fired a gun at the residence of Thongbam Ibemcha Devi, wife of Thongbam Dijamani, following a dispute over a financial transaction.
According to Dasumati, the confrontation stemmed from a loan of two lakh rupees borrowed by Dijamani from Sikandar. The situation escalated when Sikandar allegedly threatened Ibemcha Devi at gunpoint, though the bullet missed. Despite the severity of the incident, the Lamphel Police Station has yet to take action on a formal complaint filed by the victim’s family.
Dasumati added that a formal letter was submitted to the police, requesting the registration of an FIR against Sikandar. Local Meira Paibi groups and community clubs have warned of potential protests if authorities fail to act swiftly.
The Ghari Women Development Centre is urging law enforcement to address the matter urgently to prevent further unrest in the area.
