Imphal, Oct 11:
The World Meitei Council has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Manipur N. Biren Singh, highlighting the urgent need for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Meeteis residing in Assam. The Assam State Unit of the Council expressed concerns over the lack of political representation for the Meitei community in Assam, where they fear their identity is at risk of being overshadowed by the larger population of 33 million.
The memorandum pointed out that the advocacy for ST status in Assam predates similar demands from the Meeteis in Manipur. It stated that the Assam government has clarified that the recommendation for ST status for Meeteis in Assam hinges on the recognition of the Meeteis of Manipur as Scheduled Tribes.
Furthermore, the Council noted that several significant communities in Assam are on the verge of being added to the ST list, underscoring the urgency of the situation for the Meiteis living outside of Manipur, who face substantial economic and political challenges. The memorandum urged the Chief Minister to recognize that his role extends beyond Manipur, representing the broader Meitei community across India.
In light of the upcoming delimitation of constituencies in 2026, which could negatively impact the representation of Meiteis in Manipur due to their declining population, the Council appealed for timely action. They requested the Chief Minister to ensure the inclusion of the Meiteis of Manipur in the ST list before the delimitation occurs, which would also facilitate their inclusion in Assam.
The memorandum concluded with expressions of gratitude for the Chief Minister’s attention and regards from Th. Brajamohan, President of the Assam State Unit of the World Meitei Council.
