Uripok Apunba Lup urges Centre to probe Leimakhong arson, seeks compensation and arrests

Uripok Apunba Lup (UAL) has submitted separate representations to the Union Home Secretary and the Superintendent of Police, Imphal West, demanding a thorough investigation into the burning of six Meitei houses at Leimakhong on July 11, compensation for the affected families, and the immediate arrest of those responsible.

In its memorandum to the Union Home Secretary, the organisation alleged that the six houses were set ablaze by Kuki militants in broad daylight within a highly sensitive area located near the Leimakhong Army Cantonment. It claimed that the incident exposed serious security lapses despite the presence of Army personnel and Central security forces.

UAL further stated that the affected Meitei families had already been displaced since the outbreak of ethnic violence on May 3, 2023, and were living in relief camps. It alleged that villagers attempting to extinguish the fire were obstructed and injured, while State Police personnel were reportedly prevented from entering the area by Central security forces. The organisation also claimed that the Fire Service reached the spot only after the houses had been completely destroyed.

The organisation urged the Centre to order an impartial inquiry into the incident and the alleged security lapses, provide immediate compensation and rehabilitation to the affected families, identify and prosecute those responsible for the arson, and take steps to restore normalcy and ensure the safe return of displaced residents.

In a separate complaint submitted to the Superintendent of Police, Imphal West, UAL sought registration of an FIR under appropriate legal provisions, a time-bound investigation, the arrest and prosecution of all those involved, and an inquiry into the alleged lapses in security arrangements. It also called for adequate security measures to prevent recurrence of similar incidents and to ensure the safety of residents in the area.
