Imphal/Ukhrul, April 17:
The United Naga Council (UNC) on Thursday convened a large-scale consultation meeting to deliberate on the prevailing situation in Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur, signalling a more assertive stance amid the ongoing unrest.
The closed-door meeting, held at Tangkhul Baptist Church Imphal (TBCI) Hall, witnessed participation from Naga leaders, civil society organisations, church representatives, student bodies and citizens from various districts. The deliberations focused on political, security and social challenges affecting the community.
Addressing media persons, UNC President Ng Lorho stated that while Nagas remain committed to peaceful coexistence, their neutral stance should not be misconstrued. He cautioned that the community would be compelled to defend its land and people if necessary.
The council expressed concern over the lack of safe passage along the Imphal–Ukhrul stretch of National Highway-202, particularly between Mahadev (Wungvei) and Litan, citing inadequate security arrangements. It warned that alternative measures may be considered if normal movement is not restored.
The meeting also discussed the broader security situation in Naga areas, with references made to recent incidents, including the Tronglaobi blast, and the response of the state government.
UNC General Secretary Vareiyo Shatsang stated that the organisation had maintained neutrality in the ongoing conflict to avoid escalation, but said the situation has increasingly affected Naga interests. He noted that continued restraint may not be sustainable in the face of emerging challenges.
The consultation concluded with a call for unity and a firm assertion of the community’s resolve to safeguard its rights and ancestral land while maintaining its stated commitment to peace.
