The United Manipur Muslim Women’s Development Organisation (UMMWO) has sharply criticised President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to Manipur on Nupi Lan Day, calling it a glaring display of “double standards” by the central government. The organisation accused the Centre of ignoring the prolonged Manipur crisis for over two and a half years, only to choose a symbolic day to project what it described as a “contrived concern” for the people.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Manipur Press Club, UMMWO President Anwari Noorjahan said the public largely boycotted the President’s visit, viewing the timing as insensitive and disconnected from the ground reality of suffering and unresolved issues faced by the people.
Noorjahan condemned the central government for its inaction during the prolonged crisis and criticised the choice of Nupi Lan Day for the visit as “opportunistic and insincere.” She added that the move overshadowed the solemnity of the commemoration, which honours the courage and sacrifice of Manipur’s women who resisted colonial oppression.
The UMMWO called on authorities to address the ongoing crisis substantively rather than using symbolic gestures to project concern, stressing that meaningful action, not optics, is what the people of Manipur demand.
