Ukhrul observes International Human Rights Day, calls for Global Solidarity and Recognition of Naga struggles

Special Correspondent
Ukhrul, Dec 10:

Today, Ukhrul marked International Human Rights Day with a compelling call for global solidarity and recognition of the Naga people’s seven-decade-long struggle for justice and self-determination. The event, organized by the District Forum for Understanding (DFU) and Society for Indigenous Cultural Empowerment (SICE) in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority, Ukhrul, was held under the theme, “Our Rights, Our Future Now,” at the DRDA Hall of the Ukhrul Mini Secretariat.
The observance emphasized the importance of safeguarding human rights, protecting the dignity of indigenous communities, and resisting systemic oppression. It was a poignant reminder of the enduring relevance of human rights in a world grappling with inequality and social injustice.
Prominent speakers included Eno. Samuel Risom, a former MLA and human rights activist, who voiced grave concerns over the potential state policy to bring all hill lands and forests under government ownership. He warned that such a move threatens the identity and existence of indigenous communities, underscoring the need to resist policies that undermine fundamental rights.
Senior advocate and Chairman of IT MSCST, Eno. Daniel Ramsan, highlighted the constitutional guarantees enshrined in the Bill of Rights, which advocate equality and the rule of law. He reaffirmed the commitment to ensuring that every individual receives equal protection and benefit under the law.
Qr. Eno. Luingam Luithui, former Secretary General of the Asian Indigenous People’s Pact, emphasized the interconnectedness of human rights and humanity. Quoting the adage, “Humans are social beings,” he urged the audience to reflect on the sacrifices of their ancestors, who fought for freedom and justice. “Many of our elders gave their lives to secure the rights we have today, yet their sacrifices remain underappreciated,” he lamented.
The theme, “Our Rights, Our Future Now,” served as a rallying cry for immediate action to address pressing human rights issues. The United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) continues to stress the universal and inalienable nature of human rights, asserting that they are indivisible and interdependent. This year’s observance also commemorates the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a document that transformed the global human rights landscape and remains a beacon of hope for oppressed communities.
The event concluded with a powerful message: human rights are not just ideals but essential tools for prevention, protection, and transformation, especially in times of crisis. As Ukhrul stands in solidarity with global human rights movements, the call for justice, equality, and recognition of indigenous struggles remains more urgent than ever.
