The vibrant Luira Phanit 2025, the grand seed-sowing festival of the Tangkhul Naga community, commenced on Friday at Mission Ground, Alungtang, Ukhrul. Known as the “festival of all festivals,” this year’s celebration is themed “Khokkha Raokha” (Unity of Everyone Irrespective of Status) and will run from February 14 to 19, celebrating tradition, culture, and community values.
Luira Phanit, an ancient Tangkhul Naga tradition, marks the start of the seed-sowing season. The festival showcases indigenous games, music, dance, folk performances, and customary rituals, fostering a deep sense of belonging. In a significant decision, the organizing committee has refrained from inviting political leaders as chief guests to maintain the festival’s cultural essence. Speaking at a press conference at the Hunphun Shanao Long (HSL) Conference Hall, Eno Wungsorin Ragui, Convenor of the Organizing Committee, emphasized the importance of preserving cultural traditions amid rapid modernization.
A notable highlight this year is the invitation extended to Tangkhul women (‘Yorlas’) married to non-Hunphun or non-Tangkhul men, encouraging them to reconnect with their roots. Invitations have been sent globally, with organizers urging the community to spread the word. The festival features traditional gatherings, folk performances, and talent showcases, including the Ukhrul/Hunphun Got Talent competition and the Miss Hunphun Luira Contest, which offers prestigious titles and rewards. A grand musical night featuring Tangkhul artists will also be held.
In a sustainability initiative, Luira Phanit 2025 promotes an eco-friendly lifestyle, advocating “No to Plastic” campaigns and green initiatives. Organized by Ukhrul/Hunphun Frontal Organizations under the Hunphun Village Authority, Luira Phanit 2025 stands as a testament to cultural pride, unity, and heritage.
