The U.S. Consulate General Kolkata, in collaboration with the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), hosted the Manipur Chapter of the “U.S. Strategic Framework for the Indo-Pacific: Northeastern Dialogue” on July 10–11. The virtual event is part of an 18-month U.S. government-funded initiative aimed at deepening understanding of the U.S. Indo-Pacific strategy and strengthening trade, connectivity, and cooperation between the U.S. and India in the Northeast.
The Manipur edition brought together 37 participants from across sectors such as government, civil society, academia, and business. Nilanjan Ghosh of ORF Kolkata opened the dialogue by highlighting the Northeast’s central role in India’s Indo-Pacific vision and regional integration.
Elizabeth Lee, Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Consulate, stressed the importance of infrastructure and people-to-people ties, calling Manipur a key to unlocking regional economic potential. Government of Manipur official Yumnam Robita emphasized the state’s role in India’s Act East Policy and the significance of upcoming connectivity projects like the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit.
Keynote speaker Dr. Satu Limaye underscored India’s leadership in South Asia and the Indo-Pacific. Six panel discussions explored trade, digital and physical infrastructure, local industries, and regional geopolitics, with scholars highlighting key insights for youth and policymakers.
