TYCM urges government to transfer hill area civil works to MTDC

Imphal, April 29:

The Tribal Youth Council Manipur (TYCM), General Headquarters, has submitted a representation to the Chief Secretary of Manipur, urging the State Government to transfer all civil works under non-engineering and technical departments in the hill and tribal areas of the state to the Manipur Tribal Development Corporation Ltd. (MTDC).
In the representation submitted on April 28, the TYCM expressed concern that most development infrastructure projects in hill districts—undertaken by departments such as Health, Veterinary & Animal Husbandry, Sericulture, Horticulture, Tourism, and others—were being executed through the Manipur Development Society (MDS) instead of the MTDC.
According to the TYCM, its findings revealed that despite being established for the development of tribal areas, the MTDC had been largely bypassed in favour of MDS for civil construction works. The council maintained that continuing this practice would render the MTDC redundant and irrelevant, defeating its intended purpose of promoting development in tribal regions.
The youth body further stated that the MTDC currently remains dysfunctional and unable to operate effectively due to the lack of civil work assignments from non-engineering departments. It argued that as long as the MTDC exists, there should be no reason for the MDS to take up all civil works in hill and tribal areas.
The TYCM appealed to the State Government to take immediate action to revive and empower the MTDC by ensuring that it is entrusted with development works in accordance with its mandate.
