Thoubal, April 16:

Two youths from Langathel Mamang Leikai in Thoubal district were found in a critical condition after being brutally assaulted by unknown individuals on the night of April 14. The victims, identified as Nepram Surjakanta (27), son of N. Robin, and Okram Robot (27), son of O. Debananda, had gone to attend a Thabal Chongba event organized at Heirok Heituppokpi on the occasion of Cheiraoba.
According to reports, both victims were left for dead by the attackers and later discovered in a severely injured state by locals, who immediately rushed them to the hospital. The two are currently undergoing treatment at Raj Medicity, Imphal, where their conditions remain critical.
In response to the incident, residents of Langathel convened a public meeting at Langathel Yumjaomanbi Ching today morning. The meeting, organized by local Meira Paibis and club members, called for immediate action to identify and punish those responsible.
Speaking to reporters, Mayengbam Ibemcha, a member of the Langathel Meira Paibi group, condemned the assault. She expressed shock that such a brutal act occurred during a festive gathering and urged the civil society organizations (CSOs) and Meira Paibis of Heirok to cooperate in finding the culprits.
“This is not just a physical attack, but a direct threat to the safety and harmony of our communities,” Ibemcha stated. “The perpetrators assumed they had killed them and left them there. Such cruelty must not go unpunished.”
She further appealed to the public, especially residents and CSOs of Heirok, to come forward with any information that could help bring the assailants to justice.
The incident has sparked outrage among locals, who believe such violence tarnishes the spirit of cultural celebrations like Cheiraoba. Community leaders stressed the importance of unity and vigilance to ensure such acts do not repeat in the future.
Police have launched an investigation, and local clubs and Meira Paibi groups from Heirok have been urged to assist in identifying those involved.
