DMCC lodges complaint against unauthorized Thabal Chongba event in Delhi

IT News
New Delhi, April 3:

The Delhi Meetei Coordinating Committee (DMCC) has strongly condemned the unauthorized organization of Thabal Chongba by a private entity, Project X, and has lodged a formal complaint with the Delhi Police Commissioner demanding immediate intervention.
In its complaint, DMCC has alleged that Project X is commercially exploiting the sacred Meetei cultural event by organizing it on April 5, 2025, at Surat Garden, near Kishangarh, Vasant Kunj, South Delhi. The committee has termed the event as a blatant violation and an unforgivable insult to the Meetei tradition.
DMCC stated that Thabal Chongba is a sacred tradition observed only during the Yaoshang Festival in March and on Sajibu Cheiraoba (Meetei New Year). Holding it arbitrarily on another date distorts its cultural significance. The Meetei community has never allowed private or commercial firms to organize the event, as it has always been arranged by Meetei student and women’s groups. Project X is allegedly misusing and misrepresenting Thabal Chongba for profit, ignoring the sentiments of the Meetei people. The move has led to widespread outrage among the community in Delhi and beyond.
The committee has demanded the immediate cancellation of the unauthorized Thabal Chongba event and legal action against Project X for cultural exploitation and misrepresentation. They have also sought an official assurance from the authorities to prevent similar violations in the future. DMCC has urged the Delhi Police to take swift and decisive action to protect the cultural and religious integrity of the Meetei community. They have also warned that failure to act will be seen as negligence, and they will escalate their protest through legal and public avenues.
The complaint was signed by Dr. Th. Shubhash Meetei, Public Affairs Secretary, and Onam Robertson, Coordinator – Youth Wing, DMCC. Copies of the complaint have also been sent to the Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region (SPUNER), Project X, and various media outlets.
