On 12th Nov., 2018, the Secretary General of the Thadou Students’ Association, General Headquarters (TSA-GHQ) Mr Michael Lamjathang Haokip was allegedly squeezed on his neck by personnel of 12 Assam Rifles around 4:30 pm at Sita Lamkhai Check Post, Tengnoupal while he was on his way back from Moreh towards Imphal.
A TSA statement said that Michael Lamjathang Haokip was then suddenly attacked and physically assaulted by the Assam Rifles without any reasonable and probable cause. The Assam Rifles personnel squeeze his neck and hit on his face repeatedly intending or knowing it to be likely cause injury, fear or annoyance.
A complaint was given to the Officer-in-Charge, Tengnoupal Police Station on the next day. In a complaint given by Michael Lamjathang Haokip said such unlawful and violent acts of a disciplined force of the country like the Assam Rifles is truly unbecoming and uncalled for. It also mentioned that “due to the use of such criminal force by the Assam Rifles, he felt difficulties during swallowing, movement of neck and burning of sensation on neck”.
In a separate complaint letter addressed to the Commanding Officer, 12 Assam Rifles, Tengnoupal, Michael Lamjathang Haokip asked for severe punishment against the personnel involved in mishandling him.
He also urges the police to arrest the culprit as per law and sought for necessary action against the culprits.
