The Manipur Adventure and Allied Sports Institute (MAASI) today observed Bravery Day in memory of Late Hidam Shyamkishore Singh, one of Manipur’s most celebrated mountaineers. His name remains etched in the state’s adventure sports history, inspiring generations of youth to pursue courage, resilience, and lofty dreams.
Born to Hidam Ongbi Thambalmacha and Hidam Ibohal Singh of Tentha, Shyamkishore displayed brilliance in academics, sports, and social service from an early age. During his college years at DM College of Science and Arts & Commerce, he balanced studies, part-time work, and his role as a Senior NCC cadet, while dedicating himself to mountaineering — a calling that defined his life.
A founding member of MAASI, Shyamkishore played a pivotal role in promoting adventure sports in Manipur. A highly trained mountaineer, he completed India’s rigorous Basic and Advanced Mountaineering Courses and Search and Rescue training, laying the groundwork for the state’s first Everest expedition. He had already participated in several successful climbs, including Mount CB-10 in Himachal Pradesh and local peaks like Mount Koubru and Mount Siroy.
In 1985, while attempting Mount Gangotri Peak–III — a perilous climb intended to prepare the team for Everest — an avalanche claimed his life on October 13. Though his journey ended tragically, his vision and courage continue to inspire.
Every year, Bravery Day honors his legacy, reminding the youth of Manipur that true greatness lies in daring to dream and confronting challenges with unwavering resolve. Hidam Shyamkishore Singh’s spirit lives on in every climber who dares to reach for the summit.
