Imphal, Mar 6:
Transgender activist Malem Thongam, who initiated a hunger strike in New Delhi and has since continued it in Imphal, now sits at the gate of Manipur’s iconic Kangla, demanding the restoration of peace in Manipur.
Santa Khurai, a fellow transgender activist who has been steadfastly supporting Malem during her protest at Kangla, spoke on behalf of Malem, who was unable to speak due to fasting. Santa highlighted Malem’s efforts in Delhi, including submitting a memorandum to Indian PM Modi and attempting to meet Union Minister of State Rajkumar Ranjan, but receiving negative responses.
Expressing solidarity, Santa emphasized the transgender community’s support for Malem’s demands and questioned the efficacy of the government in Manipur. She pledged unwavering support to Malem, emphasizing that the protest aims to bring peace to Manipur.
Citing government’s restrictions due to unrest, police asked Malem to relocate her protest from the Kangla gate. Subsequently, she was taken to JNIMS hospital.
