Three artists, three distinct artistic expressions and a shared cultural identity came together at the Manipur State Art Gallery, Palace Compound, Imphal, where a three-man art exhibition opened on November 3 under the aegis of the Department of Art and Culture, Government of Manipur.
Curated by Dr. RK Tamphasana Devi, the exhibition brings together the works of late Maikel Meetei (1972–2021), S. Satyajit Singh (born 1978) and L. Sushil (born 1984), offering visitors three different perspectives on Manipur’s landscapes, people, everyday experiences and cultural life.
Though distinct in style and choice of medium, the three artists share a deep connection with their surroundings, translating personal experiences and observations into visual narratives.
The works of Maikel Meetei, a graduate of Government College of Art and Craft, Agartala, reflect a contemplative engagement with nature and human life. Through oil and acrylic paintings, he captured landscapes, rivers, mountains, skies and the everyday world of Manipuri women. His works retain the sensitivity of an artist whose creative vision extended beyond painting to sculpture, music and teaching.
S. Satyajit Singh brings a more observational approach through pen and ink, charcoal and acrylic. His works portray Manipuri women, landscapes and ordinary social experiences with expressive lines and careful attention to detail. A graduate of Government College of Art and Craft, Agartala, he has exhibited across several cities in India and contributed to the State’s artistic community through the Manipur Artists’ Forum.
The youngest among the three, L. Sushil explores colour, light and movement through watercolour, oil and acrylic. An MFA graduate of Government College of Art and Craft, Agartala, and former guest faculty member at Manipur University, his paintings reflect a vibrant interpretation of landscapes, women and everyday life. His artistic journey has also taken his works to international exhibitions, including those in Bangkok and Dhaka.
Together, the three artists demonstrate how a shared artistic foundation can produce remarkably individual expressions. Their works invite viewers to rediscover Manipur through different artistic sensibilities, from quiet reflection and social observation to the expressive play of colour.
The exhibition also provides an opportunity for students, emerging artists and art enthusiasts to engage with the works of three generations of Manipuri artists and appreciate the depth and diversity of the State’s contemporary visual art.
The exhibition is being held at the Manipur State Art Gallery, Palace Compound, Imphal.
