MEELAL tightens Meetei Mayek display rules

The Manipuri Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) has decided to strictly enforce the prominent display of Meetei Mayek on banners, signboards, hoardings and public advertisements across all valley districts of Manipur.

In a press release, MEELAL stated that an earlier understanding with local flex-printing operators required Meetei Mayek to be displayed at the top of banners and signboards, with its lettering at least two-thirds larger than other scripts appearing below it.

Although the organisation had initially opted for voluntary compliance in view of the prevailing situation in the State, a resolution adopted at its executive meeting in September 2026 has now paved the way for stricter enforcement.

MEELAL volunteers have begun inspecting banners and promotional materials across the valley districts. Event organisers found violating the prescribed guidelines are being called to the organisation’s head office for discussions.

The organisation also warned that printing operators involved in producing non-compliant materials would be summoned.

Maintaining that the rules would apply equally to government departments, private organisations and individuals, MEELAL asserted that there would be no compromise in its efforts to protect and promote the indigenous language and script.

Meanwhile, ahead of Ningol Chak-Kouba, observed annually on the second day of Hiyangei, MEELAL extended greetings to sisters and married daughters and appealed to the public to preserve the traditional spirit of the festival.

It urged families to avoid competitive gifting of expensive and foreign-made products and instead promote indigenous fruits, traditional food items and handloom fabrics. The organisation also called for simple family celebrations, emphasising that love, affection and family bonds should remain at the heart of Ningol Chak-Kouba.
