Thousands pay tribute on ‘Athoubasinggi Numit’ to RPF/PLA martyrs at Cheiraoching

Imphal, April 13:

A solemn and emotionally charged atmosphere enveloped Cheiraoching today as thousands of people gathered to pay homage to the fallen fighters of the proscribed Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) and its armed wing, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), on the occasion of “Athoubasinggi Numit” (Martyrs’ Day).
April 13 is annually observed to remember and honour the sacrifice of those who laid down their lives in the armed struggle for the independence of Manipur. The day holds special significance as it commemorates the lives lost in the Kodompokpi encounter and other operations in the protracted insurgency movement that has shaped much of the state’s recent history.
From early morning, people from different parts of the state made their way to the hilltop memorial site at Cheiraoching, Imphal, carrying flowers, incense, black flags, and banners. The memorial complex was filled with supporters, well-wishers, and family members of the deceased, many of whom lit candles and offered traditional prayers in front of the engraved names and portraits of the martyrs.
The crowd, including students, elderly citizens, and local volunteers, observed moments of silence, recited patriotic songs, and read out poems dedicated to the memory of the fallen. The spirit of remembrance resonated deeply as speakers and participants recalled the courage and conviction of the fighters who had chosen to sacrifice their lives for what they believed was the future of Manipur.
In addition to Cheiraoching, tributes were also paid at Kodompokpi — the site of a significant encounter where several PLA fighters were killed — and at Tekcham in Thoubal district, another location closely tied to the movement’s legacy. Family members, relatives, and community leaders gathered at these sites to perform rituals and lay floral wreaths. The emotional scenes at these locations were marked by the tears and silence of those who continue to mourn their lost kin.
Security forces maintained a close watch over the observances, especially in and around Cheiraoching and other sensitive areas. Despite the heavy presence of personnel, the day’s events passed without incident, underscoring the community’s resolve to pay respects peacefully.
Athoubasinggi Numit remains one of the most significant commemorative events in the state, particularly among those who view the armed movement as a part of Manipur’s historical journey. The continued turnout, year after year, reflects not just remembrance, but a deep-rooted political and emotional connection to a chapter of the state’s struggle that remains alive in public memory.
