The Statue of Hijam Irabot was unveiled yesterday at Tentha Village yesterday. On that day of 1948 Hijam Irabot went underground after conducting a meeting at MDU Hall in protest against the formation of Purbachal Pradesh. The unveiling function of Lamyanba Hijam Irabot was held at the premises of Tentha Makha Leikai Youth Development Organisation (TMYDO), where the statue of the pioneer leader was erected.
Donor of the statue Rakesh Naorem , while speaking on the occasion said that the statue of the pioneer leader is being built to nurture the idea of Nationalism and for understanding the ideology of Hijam Irabot among the youths of the state.
Rakesh said that September 21 of 1948 is a turning point to the journey of Hijam Irabot. It was on that day that Hijam Irabot organized a public meeting against the formation of proposed Purbachal Pradesh, which comprises of Manipur Tripura, Cachar and Lushai Hill at MDU. Large number of supporters from Lamlai area came to join the meeting by shouting slogans. However, they were stopped by police using force at Pungdongbam area and a Police personnel identified as OC Naranbabu died after he accidentally shot fire from his service gun. The death of the police personnel was blamed to Hijam Irabot and after the then government issued warrant of arrest, Hijam Irabot was compelled to go underground. The day is being remembered as PUNGDONGBAM THOUDOK or MANIPUR KANBA NUMIT by today’s generation, Rakesh added.
