The bandh called by various organizations at Moirang area has been suspended for 30 days starting midnight yesterday following an assurance to look into the matter by the state government. The announcement was made by three MLAs- M Prithivraj of Moirang Kendra, S Bira of Kumbi Kendra and Manga Vaiphei of Henglep Kendra at a public gathering at the Thangjing Loukol, a sacred and historic site at Moirang. JC Tiddim- spearheading the blockade, Thangjing Seva Mandal, Famnaiba Famnaibi Cheirap Moirang, Maiba Maibi Loisang, Historical Heritage Development Assn, Ebudhou Thangjing Laithel Committee Tera khongshangbi and various other representatives of numerous civil society organizations along with officials of Bishnupur District Administration were present at the public meeting. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Y Mani Khuman, President AMUCO said that there is an immediate need to trace the historical facts regarding the present debacle regarding the naming of the sub-division. Johnson Elangbam, President UCM also points out that the state government should refer the matter with the subject experts and other resource persons before taking a final decision and that the present tension and difference could have been avoided had the state government adopted the practice of deliberating with the experts on important matters instead of taking abrupt and hasty decisions. The gathering took a unanimous decision to suspend the stir for 30 days for the state government to look into the matter and to take an informed decision failing which various forms of agitations will resume from the 22nd of February onwards, with MLA Prithviraj declaring that he will resign if the name of the proposed sub-division is not changed to Thangjing or any existing village in the sub-division.
