Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) has called upon all communities in the state to remain calm and maintain unity in the wake of the killing of Rishikanta Mayanglambam in Churachandpur. The appeal followed a meeting convened in Imphal by leaders of Thadou Inpi Manipur along with representatives of various civil society organisations to review the prevailing situation and to reinforce the peace process and inter-community understanding that, according to the organisation, has yielded positive outcomes so far.
In a statement issued by Manggou Thadou, Joint General Secretary of Thadou Inpi Manipur, the organisation stated that it had held a cordial and constructive meeting with representatives of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), Arambai Tenggol (AT) and the Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS). The meeting, the statement said, reaffirmed a shared resolve to jointly oppose and resist all forms of terrorism and violence that threaten the unity, integrity and progress of Manipur.
The statement noted that sustained cooperation and understanding among communities over the past more than two years had enabled members of the Thadou community to move, reside and live safely and freely in the valley areas, particularly in Imphal. TIM appealed to both the Thadou and Meitei communities to exercise restraint, remain peaceful and continue strengthening the trust and mutual understanding achieved so far.
TIM further urged members of the Thadou community to reclaim what it described as their true identity, to reject destructive and radical Kuki agendas, to resist what it termed false propaganda and to place confidence in the leadership of TIM. The organisation also appealed to other ethnic communities to adopt a similar approach in the collective pursuit of peace and stability in the state.
Strongly condemning the killing of Rishikanta Mayanglambam, Thadou Inpi Manipur stated that the victim had been abducted from the residence of his wife, Chinnu Haokip, at Tuibong and later killed, despite having obtained prior approval for his visit from the Kuki National Organisation, a Kuki suspension of operations group active in the area, as well as from local village authorities. The statement added that the incident occurred despite a significant presence of security personnel in the Tuibong area.
According to TIM, the killing appeared to be politically motivated and bore similarities to the actions of groups whose activities and conspiracies were linked to the outbreak of violence in May two thousand twenty three.
The organisation described such acts as barbaric and unacceptable, and called for their condemnation by all sections of society. It demanded swift, impartial and decisive action by the authorities to identify, apprehend and punish those responsible, including those who orchestrated the crime.
The statement further said that the people of Manipur must not allow anti-peace terrorist groups to intimidate society through fear and violence. It asserted that the perpetrators were attempting to undermine the ongoing peace process and to provoke renewed large-scale violence that has kept the state in turmoil for more than two and a half years.
