Ukhrul/Senapati, Feb 19:

In a spectacular and historic coronation event, Th. Visale was officially crowned as the new chief of Northern Vafiimai on Tuesday. The grand occasion, marked by rich cultural traditions and a strong community presence, saw the participation of over 1,500 attendees, including headmen, village authorities, chairmen, dignitaries, and well-wishers from across the state and neighboring Nagaland.
The venue, adorned with vibrant traditional architecture, reflected the deep-rooted cultural heritage of the Vafiimai people. Prior to the crowning, various local groups from Laii village, dressed in traditional attire, took part in a long cultural procession, chanting reverential tunes and paying homage to their ancestors.
The official declaration of Th. Visale, son of Late Tho, as the new chief of Northern Vafiimai/Laii/Gaziphema, was made by Kh. Zirrai, headman of Laii village, in the presence of esteemed leaders, pastors, catechists, and the gathered community. While bestowing the title, Zirrai encouraged Visale to always put God first in all matters of governance, praying that his reign would bring peace, prosperity, and blessings to the people.
In his welcome speech, LK. Kasaso expressed gratitude to Almighty God for the success of the event. He extended his heartfelt appreciation to dignitaries, including Minister Khashim Vashum, MLA Losii Dikho, MLA Kumosha, and representatives from various tribes such as Mao, Poumai, Tangkhul, and Angami communities. Highlighting the historical significance of Vafiimai, he recounted how the forefathers, led by a seven-horned reindeer and seven brave hunters, settled in present-day Laii village. According to oral tradition, this divine guidance signified the God-given right of the Vafiimai people to inhabit and rule the land.
The region holds multiple names, each with a unique story. Vafiimai was named by the forefathers, Laii was named by the Manipuri Maharaja, and Gaziphema, meaning “vegetable village,” was named by the Angami people during British rule.
Delivering a fatherly blessing, Dr. Alexander Pao, Advisor of the Poumai Naga Chief Association (PNCA) and former MLA of 47-Karong Assembly Constituency, urged the people to respect and support their chief, emphasizing that a leader is chosen, blessed, and anointed by God. He reminded the gathering that leadership comes with great responsibility—to govern with clear vision, integrity, and a commitment to justice. He lauded the collective efforts of the villagers in constructing the chief’s house, a testament to their unity and support. He further advised that a village chief should be an example to his people—leading a disciplined life, abstaining from alcohol and immoral activities, and upholding the values of righteousness and fairness.
To honor and welcome the newly crowned chief, visiting village authorities, chairmen, and dignitaries presented him with traditional gifts such as spears, daws (machetes), and shawls. In return, the new chief extended locally made spears and daws to the visiting dignitaries, symbolizing reciprocal respect and tribal unity.
Athikho, President of the Mao Council, congratulated Th. Visale, acknowledging his ascension as a proud moment not just for Vafiimai but for the entire Poumai community. He emphasized that true leadership lies in listening to the people, as a leader who values his people’s voices is a true gem. Similarly, RB. Pani, President of the Poumai Naga Union, urged the new chief to be a man of integrity and faith, calling upon him to uphold the sacred trust placed in him.
In his vote of thanks, Th. Kapani Chapao, Chairman of Laii village, expressed his deep gratitude to the various headmen, council members, pastors, dignitaries, civil society organizations (CSOs), and well-wishers for making the event a success. He also extended his thanks to the local community for their unwavering support and cooperation in organizing the ceremony.
The grand coronation of Th. Visale marks the beginning of a new chapter for the people of Northern Vafiimai, rooted in tradition, faith, and collective unity. With the blessings of elders and the trust of his people, the new chief embarks on a journey to lead with wisdom, strength, and a commitment to progress.
