Ukhrul, Feb 19:

Among the many cultural traditions of the world, the “Ngala-Ngayan” (Laa Khanganui), popularly known as the Virgin Dance of the Tangkhul Naga, stands out as an unparalleled heritage. This sacred tradition, performed by young Tangkhul maidens, is a mesmerizing display of grace, purity, and cultural richness. Their dazzling traditional attire, intricate embellishments, and synchronized movements captivate onlookers, making it a cherished spectacle of the Luira Phanit (Lui-Ngai-Ni) or the Seed Sowing Festival in Ukhrul.
The highlight of the sixth day of the festival was the grand Laa Khanganui performance at the jam-packed Heritage Mission Ground in Alungtang, Ukhrul. Hundreds of Hunphun maidens, adorned in their finest traditional attire, swayed to the rhythmic folk tunes, enchanting festival-goers with their graceful movements and melodious voices. The entire ground came alive as spectators gathered to witness the bevy of beautiful lasses draped in colorful attires and elaborate accessories, representing different localities of Ukhrul town.
Laa Khanganui, originally a beauty contest in the forefathers’ era, continues to be a sacred and revered dance, strictly meant for maidens of impeccable chastity. According to legend, any girl who fails to meet the cultural and moral criteria and dares to take part in this pageant will be exposed by an ominous sign, revealing her ineligibility. This deep-rooted belief adds a sense of mystery and reverence to the performance, making it a truly extraordinary tradition.
Adding further vibrancy to the celebrations was the Awungashi Pheichak folk dance, performed by the Greenland Youth Group. The dance sequence, featuring synchronized movements between men and women, was set to the mesmerizing rhythm of the “Mayar Ngala Yan,” where performers lock eyes with their partners in perfect harmony. The cultural extravaganza at Luira Phanit continues to showcase the rich traditions and artistic heritage of the Tangkhul Naga, leaving spectators enthralled by the grandeur and significance of the celebrations.
