Tension gripped the Khurai Telipati area in Imphal East district today morning after a large number of residents strongly resisted an eviction drive launched by the district administration to clear alleged encroachments on government land.
The operation, which began around 7:30 a.m., witnessed dramatic scenes as local residents confronted officials and police personnel accompanying the eviction team. Protesters blocked the movement of a JCB excavator brought to demolish structures and shops standing on the disputed land, bringing the drive to a temporary halt.
The eviction was carried out following an order issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Imphal East directing the removal of structures allegedly constructed on government property. As officials arrived at the site, residents gathered in large numbers and challenged the action, leading to a tense face-off with the Executive Magistrate and other authorities.
Amid the escalating standoff, Wangkhei MLA Thangjam Arun Kumar rushed to the spot and attempted to mediate between the aggrieved residents and the administration. Despite his efforts to seek an amicable resolution, the authorities proceeded with the operation, citing legal and administrative obligations.
The dispute over the land has remained unresolved for years and had previously reached the court. According to sources, the case was dismissed by the High Court of Manipur on January 22 this year. Following the court’s decision, the administration served fresh eviction notices before initiating Monday’s drive.
The confrontation continued for several hours, with residents voicing resentment over the eviction and demanding reconsideration of the government’s decision. The situation remained tense but under control as a heavy police presence was maintained in the area.
After prolonged discussions involving the Sub-Divisional Officer and other concerned officials with the affected families, a consensus was eventually reached. The eviction drive subsequently resumed and was completed without further incidents.
