Suvendu Adhikari today took oath as the first Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal, marking a historic political shift in the state after decades of rule by regional and Left parties.
Governor R. N. Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Adhikari at a grand ceremony held at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, senior Union ministers and Chief Ministers of NDA-ruled states.
Thousands of BJP supporters gathered at the historic venue as the saffron party formally assumed power in West Bengal for the first time. The oath-taking ceremony coincided with Rabindra Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, lending symbolic significance to the event.
Adhikari, who emerged as the BJP’s principal face in Bengal politics after joining the party in 2020, was unanimously elected leader of the BJP Legislative Party on Friday in the presence of Amit Shah.
