Students Gherao Education (U) office demanding opening of educational institutions

Around 50volunteers of Coordination Committee of Colleges Students’ Union, Manipur(COCOCSUM) today Gherao the office of Directorate of Education (U) at around 1pm demanding immediate opening of the educational institutions which has been order to shut down by the state government in the aftermath of the mass agitations for introduction of ILP system in the state. The district administration had shut down the school fearing the expected intensity of the agitation following the death of class XI student Sapam Robinhood in police action on July 8.The students also locked the office of Directorate of Education (U) and staged protest shouting slogans denouncing the closing ofthe schools in front of the Education (U) office building.Speaking to media persons, Loktongbam Sanatomba,Convenor of the Coordination Committee said that even during wartime,educational institutes must be open. And, the state government’s closure of schools, colleges and educational establishment is violation of students’ rights.“We want to study, and the government should re-open all the educational institutes in the state. So, in protest against the closure of educational institutes, the Committee has imposed indefinite curfew on all the education department’s offices” said the Coordinator.While demanding to implement Inner Line Permit System, Elangbam Ojitkumar,a protestors urged the state government to take immediate action against the police personnel who killed Sapam Robinhood, during a protest demonstration for implementation of ILP in the state. The protestors also accused the Education Minister for his failure to reopen educational institutes.During the protest demonstration the students shouted various slogans like‘we want to study;’ ‘open school colleges;’ ‘we demand ILPS in Manipur;’ etc.
