Students bodies – Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) and Students’ Union of Kangleipak (SUK) – welcomed the recent announcement by Education Minister, Moirangthem Okendra to conduct recruitment of educations department’s staff through merit basis.
Speaking to Imphal Times, President of DESAM, Moirangthem Angamba said that the students body has been pressing the concern departmental authorities to conduct recruitment of teachers and other staffs for education department through merit cum experience instead of mark basis.
Marks obtained by the candidates in examinations could not be the ultimate yardstick to measure his/her talent and competency in the field. One can earn good marks in examination from a lousy university, board or council; even a mediocre student secures 80 percent from open and distance educations, he said.
Due to the present recruitment method undeserved candidates, who have no notions about teaching but secured high score in qualifying examinations, were selected. This led to deteriorating quality of education in the state.
The proposed selection method would enable to recruit deserving candidates President of AMSU, Sanasam Subhachandra said, and he added that most of the educational institutes encouraged students to get passed them in higher mark by any means.
While welcoming the minister’s announcement, Surprem Ningthouja, Publicity Secretary of SUK said that if it has been materialized, the proposed system would provide equal opportunity to all especially hardworking candidates.
