The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) has extended support to the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) and other civil society organisations (CSOs) demanding an NRC update before the Census is conducted in Manipur.
In a statement issued by STDCM General Secretary K. Bhogendrajit, the organisation said the prevailing conflict and displacement have created conditions that could affect the accuracy of Census data. It argued that people displaced by the violence remain unable to return to their original places of residence, making a comprehensive Census difficult.
STDCM also expressed concern over alleged illegal entry of immigrants into Manipur and possible changes in population patterns during the ongoing conflict. It supported the demand that the NRC be updated, illegal immigrants identified and dealt with, and the Census conducted thereafter.
The organisation further reiterated its demand for the inclusion of the Meitei/Meetei community in the Scheduled Tribe list and reservation of Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies under Articles 330 and 332 of the Constitution.
Meanwhile, STDCM announced that its 2026 Annual General Meeting will be held on August 30 at 12:30 PM at the Conference Hall of the Youth Hostel, Khuman Lampak, Minuthong Mayarom, and appealed to members to attend in large numbers.
