State-Level consultation calls for strengthened nutrition and social protection framework

A state-level consultation programme on “Mapping of Nutrition and Social Protection Schemes” was held today at Thangjing Hall of the Manipur Press Club, bringing together policymakers, development practitioners and civil society representatives for deliberations on improving welfare delivery systems.
The programme was organised by the Integrated Rural Development Service Organisation (IRDSO), Wangjing, with the objective of assessing existing schemes and identifying gaps in implementation, particularly in the areas of nutrition and social protection.
In the inaugural session, speakers highlighted the need for better coordination among stakeholders to ensure that government initiatives effectively reach vulnerable sections of society. They also shared perspectives based on their respective areas of work.
An Extension Officer of the Social Welfare Department outlined the current status of welfare schemes, pointing to both progress and continuing challenges in grassroots implementation. The official stressed the importance of enhancing awareness and accessibility, especially in remote and marginalised regions.
A Child Development Project Officer spoke on maternal and child health, underscoring the significance of early childhood nutrition and the role of the Integrated Child Development Services in long-term human development.
The Director of a human rights organisation spoke on the linkage between social protection and human rights, calling for inclusive and rights-based policy approaches with greater accountability, transparency and community participation.
A representative from Indigenous Perspectives highlighted the challenges faced by indigenous communities and urged the adoption of culturally appropriate strategies that integrate traditional knowledge systems while addressing nutritional concerns.
The consultation concluded with an interactive session where participants shared field experiences and put forward recommendations. Organisers expressed optimism that the outcomes of the consultation would contribute towards more inclusive and responsive policymaking in the state.
