IT News
Imphal, Feb 8:

Sujata Thokchom, serving as the Convenor of Imagi Meira, shared insights regarding recent developments, highlighting the proactive engagement of civil society representatives with Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata. Their primary objective during this meeting was to advocate for the convening of a crucial session involving the Privilege and Ethics Committee. Thokchom revealed that the representatives passionately urged Speaker Satyabrata to expedite the scheduling of this significant gathering. Encouragingly, the Speaker responded affirmatively, granting consent to organize the meeting before the looming deadline of February 14th.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Manipur Press Club, Sujata conveyed that members of Imagi Meira had pressed for an emergency session of the Assembly with the Speaker. She further noted that the Speaker had pledged to make earnest efforts to promptly convene the meeting in response to their request.
Sujata elaborated on their endeavors to encourage government representatives to facilitate the meeting, highlighting, “Members of Imagi Meira have actively engaged with the Privilege and Ethics committee members, notably from constituencies including Khangabok, Kumbi, Lilong, and Sagolband, urging their attendance. These representatives have affirmed their commitment to participate. Additionally, we met with the committee’s chairman, MLA Nishikanta Sapam, urging all six members to join the meeting.”
She further mentioned their proactive approach, including a meeting with the president of Bharatiya Janata Party Manipur Pradesh, in their pursuit of action against MLAs advocating for separate administration. Sujata recounted, “On February 6th, we endeavored to meet BJP President Adhikarimayum Sarda Devi at Thambal Shanglen, but she was indisposed due to illness. Subsequently, we visited her residence at Brahmapur Aribam Leikai and appealed for appropriate action against the said MLAs. President Sharda informed us that they had already submitted a request for the same in May 2023. She advised us to reconvene after February 14th.”
Imagi Meira has been steadfastly working towards fostering peace in Manipur, engaging in democratic protests aimed at quelling the unrest that has plagued the region since May 3, 2023. The organization’s members have consistently urged both the Government and the BJP to take decisive action against those advocating for separate administration in Manipur.
