Renowned social activist Sobita Maibam has been honoured with the “Virangana Savitri Bai Phule National Samman Padak-2024”, recognizing her unwavering commitment to uplifting marginalized communities. The award ceremony, organized jointly by the Babu Jagjivan Ram Kala Sanskriti, Sahitiya Akademi, and Rajendra Bhavan Trust, was held at Rajendra Bhavan in New Delhi on December 11, as part of the 53rd Suba Rashtriya Vijay Diwas-2024 celebrations.
The prestigious award was presented to Sobita Maibam by Shrimati Rupa BK, Minister of Forest and Environment, Government of Nepal. The event was graced by Ramdas Athawale, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, as the Chief Guest, and presided over by Dr. Shrimati Meera Kumar, former Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Several distinguished personalities attended as guests of honor.
Born on September 16, 1973, in Thoubal Nongangkhong Bamon Leirak, Sobita Maibam is the daughter of Leiba Waikhom Ibopishak and Waikhom (O) Manjuri Devi. Married to the late Maibam Premkumar Singh of Wangjing Bazar Thong Wangma in 1994, she is the mother of one son and two daughters.
Sobita Maibam’s accolades include the National Excellency Award 2024 by the Welred Foundation, West Bengal, Kolkata, as well as the Dr. Ambedkar Fellowship National Award 2023, the Mother Teresa National Award 2023, and the International Award 2024 in the social work category by the World Human Rights Protection Organization.
