Imphal, Feb 21:
Pureiromba Keithel Nupi Seva Committee has organized a sit-in protest today to condemn the persecution faced by village defense volunteers who are serving Manipur day and night. Soram Nomita, President of the Committee, expressed deep-seated frustration with the government’s lack of action, attributing the current conflict to what she termed as government’s carelessness.
Soram Nomita emphasized that the “present conflict could have been averted if the government had taken appropriate action earlier.” She added that the government’s fundamental responsibility to protect the lives and livelihoods of its citizens, highlighting a stark disconnect between official duties and reality on the ground. In response to this perceived negligence, many young people, including students, have taken to the streets to safeguard their land and villages.
Furthermore, Nomita lamented the absence of law and order, particularly in the hills, pointing to a breakdown in governance and security infrastructure. She raised alarm over the government’s escalating response, citing reports of detentions, arrests, and even the involvement of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in handling the volunteers.
Warning to the authorities, Soram Nomita declared that if the government fails to provide assurance that the situation will be brought under control and ceases its harassment of village volunteers, they will face formidable resistance from the women folk of Manipur.
The sit-in protest organized by Pureiromba Keithel Nupi Seva Committee is a reminder of the deep-seated grievances and frustrations simmering within the Meitei community of Manipur.
